Something New at Stamp Your Heart Out, Claremont, CA (www.Stampyourheart.com)

Journal Improv ... 1:00 pm.til ? ... Saturday, May 8, 2010
"True Colors" artists Lisa Hoffman and Marylinn Kelly with an inter-active lecture and demonstration on creating journal pages and bringing MORE to any projects you create. During this technique and supply-oriented session, Lisa and Marylinn will do what they do best: INSPIRE. You'll see samples showing possibilities for a variety of approaches rather than strictly finished pieces. Guests are invited to ask for ideas on the use of products they already own - you may bring a list or a couple of actual products, keeping in mind the word, "moderation," and our specialists will help you with ways to incorporate these into your mixed media/journal work. Are there too many items in your studio that cause you to wonder, "What do I do with THIS?" and vow, "I can't let myself get anything new until I've used some of (fill in the blank)?" The emphasis will be on having fun with creative pages of all sorts in a format of improvisational problem solving. Part panel discussion, part thinking on their feet, the event will offer lots of suggestions on how to layer color, texture and image to produce unique art that expresses your individual voice. Please bring your journal to share.

“Wild and Whirling Words” with Marylinn Kelly

Workshop Description:

Words are a way in. They are the tools we use to explain ourselves to ourselves. They allow us to speak truthfully, even if that truth only holds for a moment. When new truths arise, so will the words to name them. With words we tell our stories. No writing experience is required for this workshop. Together we will write, read, talk and, with favorable winds, arrive in new territory. Be curious, be flexible, be willing. We will find a way to get it down on paper.

Supplies Needed:

Please bring a few of your favorite writing pens, the smooth-flowing kind that fit your hand, the ones that move as fast as you can think. Please also bring a notebook in which to write . . . I recommend something of a good size, like a lined, collage notebook with pages that can be torn out easily. Other materials you will need are a few wide-tipped marking pens in strong colors, not highlighters . . . too pale; a package of index cards in white or colors, lined or not; your favorite PORTABLE set of alphabet stamps (not the big sign-making sets – give yourself a break) and a NON-PERMANENT ink pad in black or a deep color. PLUS, please bring one favorite quotation. It can be lyrics from a song, material from a movie, lines from any work of literature, a choice sentence or two from a book of quotations or something from your own writing. It needs to be something that resonates for you which you can speak about.

Optional supplies: any other word or letter related material, stencils, charms, scrapbooking supplies, die-cut letters, your own favorite cool and wonderful papers.
